Decided to warm up with the bike before the run, but, I forgot how to ride a bike and crashed on State St. Anyone driving by at about 10:30 on Friday night probably got a really good laugh. Bloodied and bruised, I returned home after the "warm up" (3 miles) and managed to run for about 1.5 miles.I was so mad at myself......and embarassed!

You're killing me! (and moses as he's reading over my shoulder). Stick with the running. . . It's a lot harder to crash, but I guess it's still possible.

Total Distance

Left at about 8:45pm from my in-laws house in Lindon when it was pouring rain. The effects of my bike crash didn't slow me down much at all. Ran along the canal to Center St. in PG, then dropped down to somewhere south of the Purple Turtle and headed back to my house via State St. So nice to run off-road and I didn't have to stop once!! Came in at 1:13, was hoping for 1:12 - 1:15 so I felt great about that.

Total Distance
3.00

Ran 1/2 mile quick, 1/2 mile recovery just to get an idea of my speed.

Finished 22:53 with the last 1/2 mile @ 3:15....hard to breathe, but fun to go fast!!!

Total Distance
6.00

Tried to keep consistent pace for entire 6 miles. Aiming for 8 minutes per mile.... finished 48:19 and very happy with that considering I had to stop for a total of 1 minute for different stop lights/cars. A couple of the miles, I must've come in closer to 7:30 - 7:45.

rest day - Provo River Half tomorrow

Race: Provo River Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:43:24, Place overall: 258, Place in age division: 26
Total Distance
13.20

I don't really remember much about the race other than some miles felt better than others. I started at 7:00 pace or even a bit below. Mile 2 hurt (must have been the downhill I tried on Thurs.) Didn't want to stop so I ran through the pain and waited for the Ibuprofen to kick in. Finally at about mile 4 or 5 the pain started to lessen. Slow up the hill in the canyon, but then after a "goo" and water at the aid station I felt great. The entire race, I never once felt pain in my lungs so I think I can go faster if I just can get my legs under me. I started to pick people off down the trail as I kept 7:30 pace for quite a few miles. I saw Amanda at about mile 10 or so and caught a bit of a second wind. I absolutely HATED the weaving through the businesses in the Riverwoods. Didn't know when to kick so I could've finished even better and faster and according to my GPS, it was 13.24 so maybe 30 seconds faster?? Super sore on Sat. afternoon with a couple of blisters here and there. Stiff shins and calves and overall creaking joints and muscles. Felt good about my accomplishment after 10 years of inactivity!

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 15:58:03

GREAT JOB!!! And after 10 years of inactivity you kicked my butt! I do totally agree about the ending of the race---it messed with the head, for sure.

From Scooby on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 16:15:36

Thanks Kelli! Great job on your PR too!

I was too busy looking around at all the studs and studettes to even think that I accomplished anything great.... other than just FINISHING!! I was probably as sore as you and can just now walk again today....(I looked like a retard at church). Warm shower and Ibuprofen worked for me...don't know about the whole ice bath thing. And,yes, I saw the FRBlog guys & gals, but felt dorky to go say hi to anyone at all. I was hiding behind my black Nike hat. Maybe I'll wear a Scooby Doo shirt to tip any other bloggers off as to my real identity! :) hee hee!

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 16:34:13

A bunch of people from my church ran with me, so I made sure that I walked totally normal and professed NO PAIN all 3 hours yesterday! I even wore heals as extra proof (something you have never experienced, I am sure, but it hurts when your calves are sore!) Then I went home and collapsed for a 2 hour nap.

I am glad I am not the only one that believes in the warm shower and Aleve (ibuprofen does not work as fast).

You wear your Scooby Doo shirt and I will wear my black Mickey Mouse hat---we will find each other and just point at the rest of the bloggers and wish we "belonged" (I am kidding!!!)

Hey, BTW, how is the lose 10-15 pounds going??? I cannot lose weight when I train!! I have about the same to lose, and I was down 5 as of last Thursday---but they are all back today! I am so hungry all of the time when I RUN. I am picking the right food, just too much of it. Just wondering how that was going for you?!?

From Scooby on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 17:18:38

I've never tried Aleve, but I would like to. Ibuprofen and Tylenol are my best friends lately!! I have never tried heels, but I would like to have yesterday....it actually felt better to "tippy-toe" rather than walk normal.....weird, I know.

As far as the losing weight.....RIGHT THERE WITH YA!I ate so well the week of the race and thought I was down 5, (and even still might be), but then Sat. and Sun. felt like I deserved to eat a bit more and totally enjoyed myself (brownies, rice crispy treats, etc.) I too am eating a lot due to my training and feel like my metabolism just can't keep up. I TRY to make healthy decisions,.....but, you know how it goes! I really feel like if I could lose the 10, I might actually feel "lighter" and run faster..... or if anything, my knees, joints, etc. may not have so much weight "pounding down on them." :P

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 19:43:38

I will sign up to see the man in heels at church!

I rewarded myself only slightly---like a half of a brownie and a child sized ice cream!! If I had known I would be up 5 pounds, I would have eaten the entire pan of brownies!!

Oh well, I am glad to at least know that I am not alone. I read, and who know whether or not it is true, that you naturally run 2 seconds faster per mile for every pound you lose. That would be nice!!! THAT is why I am trying so hard---easy fastness.

Good luck to you! What is your next race?

From jona on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 20:20:07

Kelli, I saw Scooby yesterday at church and he was wearing heals. Don't let him tell you otherwise. I noticed as bent down to get his "rice crispy treat" that he was snacking on and dropped a piece.

Kidding. Both of you, good job on the race!

From Scooby on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 17:06:13

Kelli - next race is St. George. I guess I could try to get in a couple of 5ks or 10ks before then. Might run Hobble Creek, but not really excited about the pain again. I'll play it by ear. Moment of weakness last night with the family......went to Chadders for burger and fries. (But I burned off all those calories with my run last night......right?)

Oh, and don't listen to Jon, the heels were actually his.....he's got some new training regimen that will improve his calf strength or something and he recommended them to me! ha ha ha! :)

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 17:54:11

I think I need to come to your church---rice krispie treats and men in heels!!! Far more entertaining than where I go.

And, oh--I LOVE YOU (in a totally platonic way, of course!!) Thank you for not being a perfect eater. What I would give to have a burger and fries...I would sell my last born (not the first born, she is my babysitter for the other 4---I need her)!! I snacked on trail mix from Costco---nuts, raisins, and MnM's all day to the point that I was ill and skipped dinner. I almost lost my trail mix while I ran last night---that would truly have NEGATED the calories!

Okay, now that I can be labeled a blog stalker, I will let you be! I think you should run Hobble Creek, though. Pain only makes us stronger...and I hate to suffer alone! I'll buy you a bottle of Aleve!

From Scooby on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 18:12:20

Kelli!

Ha ha ha! So funny....you're my only entertainment today during the monotony that is my nice little desk job. Love the Costco trail mix!....snacking on the nuts and fruits kind today, which may actually be healthy to some extent?

I am proud to have cut out both caffeine AND carbonated beverages from the diet within the past couple of weeks, but still feel justified in some junk food every now and then to keep me sane.....I mean, I'm not ready for the Olympics.....yet.....

I run in the evenings so I have to be careful what I eat for dinner or I'll have burps later. YUK! My big challenge is not going for Oreos and milk after I get back from my run!! :) I'm 6'2 and 195-ish so I can hide a few calories and get away with it due to my height, HOWEVER.... I do believe that whole "run-faster-the-lighter-you-are" thing so, ideally, I think I'd feel great at 185 or 180 and not look too "marathon-ish looking"....... (no offense to anyone else reading this who already has the runner's body - I used to have it too............back in high school!) Happy running and good luck with the early morning stuff!

From jona on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 18:58:22

I'm so offended. I'm your height and I weigh in at 185 ('ish). I was kind of hoping someone would say hey he looks a little "marathon-ish." BUT, since I gave up marathons (kidding) I guess it doesn't matter.

I hear you guys talking about eating good, and it makes me want to go get a serious meal at Costa Veda!!!

Hey, Hobble Creek is full up. So your off the hook. I'll be thinking about you. Wishing I had given you my entry.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 22:56:49

It is a requirement that all REAL trail mix contain M&M's, dontcha know?

I think we are here to enjoy life, thus, we must also enjoy our food every once in a while. My personal trainer kept telling me that I needed to see food as fuel, and I told him that was fine as long as I could be fueled by ice cream!

Holy crap---you guys are tall! How did I miss you? I am all of 5' 6", and I will just keep my weight to myself, thanks! I think your weight is good already---ENJOY the OREOS! Gain some weight, would ya, so I can beat you?

From jona on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 01:53:23

Scooby is only 6'2" with those 3" heels on!

Ha Ha Scoobs, beat you to the joke!

From Scooby on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 11:06:47

Jon -

You got me; that was a good one! (They're still your heels though! HA!) I would be game for am runs, but it'd have to be early (5:30ish). Let me know!

I only wish I looked half as good as you!

Kelli-

thanks for the motivation.....to continue feeding my face!! Good luck @ Hobble Creek....you'll do great! You don't need to be tall or to have freakish long legs to run fast, (like Jon & I), you just need to eat the right "fuel".... you know like apple slices....(w/caramel dipping sauce) or like some celery.... (w/Peanut Butter) or some nice granola......(w/whole milk).....mmmmmmmmmmm ;p

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 13:37:10

AND....what have you done since Monday?? Are you being lazy or were you abducted by aliens?

We did a long run today and we are really stiff, so the running is not really helping it to go away. It must just take time.

Hey---I've lost 2 pounds this week, how about you? And, I had a brownie twice and a shake. Incredible.

From jona on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 21:21:32

I'm still alive! Just lazy blogger sometimes. Ran Wed. and Fri. and Sat. but not all the mileage I had planned. (see latest entries). Feeling pretty good since the race though and should have a much better week this week.....except for my left foot! Toe #2: inner blister where big toe rubs, and top of toe blister (not sure why), toe #3: inner blister where

toe #2 rubs, toe #4: top of nail blister, and finally toe #5: top of toe blister and blackened nail....(I think I might lose this one soon). New shoes I suppose, but my right foot was just fine.....hmmmmm......

Took the scooter out to the scooter shop to drop off to be fixed and ran home. I mapped it out to be 9 miles, but had to cut it short due to how long the scooter place kept me, and to help get kids showered for Sunday, so it ended up 7.5 in 1:04:33 (about 8:35 pace). First 3 miles were 7:45 - 8:00, then couple of hills slowed my pace considerably. Supposed to be conversational pace anyways. Felt good mostly, cramping in right calf though.

Comments
From Kelli on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 18:11:58

What is up with the calves? Is it some kind of disease you catch when you blog here?

BUT---GOOD DAD!! You helped with the showering the night before! You must be a saint. I am more of the yell and scream from 7:45 until 8:15 every Sunday, then resort to throwing 4 kids into the same bath, dunking them to get there hair wet, check to make sure the fingernails look clean (that is the first sign of a dirty kid---dirty nails) and then yanking them all out. I yell at them all and tell them they are going to make me late and at about that point my husband shows up and helps them get dressed. Then I realize I never woke up my 15 year old, and she shows up 45 minutes late every Sunday!

Anyway, back to running. You were a lazy blogger, but you had great miles. GOOD JOB!

From Scooby on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 10:46:57

Yeah, the wifey wasn't too happy about how long it took me, but I blamed it on the scooter place and NOT on my slow running! :) I said, "I did the best I could sweetie," then got the boys in the shower. Family before running is my motto.....unless I need to "get away" from the crying/whining/yelling and then at about mile 2, I feel guilty and tired and think, why couldn't I have a fun "getaway" like golf or bowling?!?!

Total Distance

Nothing, nada, zilch, zero, zippo....... Cranky kids, moody wife (she's entitled due to the kids), had to visit with family friends while kids got crankier, didn't get to mow the lawn, dinner flopped, knees killing me, healing blisters, dead tired and suffering from allergies..... Decided to cut my losses and get the day over with so I went to bed early. Tomorrow is a new day!  :)

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:49:12

WOW---bad day! I hear ya on the cranky kids. I seriously think there is something up with the moon---there are all cookoo right now!

Good luck with the blisters. I really think those are the pains I hate the most when it comes to running---I have ultra-sensitive toes. I think mine are gone for now (and one toe-nail, too).

Tell your wife to have a better day. When mom is happy, everyone is happy (provided everyone was already happy when mom got out of bed and things remained that smiley all day!)

Do you have a race soon? I can not remember.

From Lucia on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:59:37

Wowwww! Somebody had a case of the Monday's!!! I hope today's going better!

From Scooby on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:00:37

yes, today will be better! I always say......"happy wife - happy life!" I hope she has a good day with the boys.

I would like to run the Hobble Creek but would have to run as a bandit.... how do you feel about this? I wouldn't drink the drinks or eat their gu, I would mainly just want to go for the workout (I need to run 14 on Sat.) any thoughts.....

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:07:43

You can drink my water---I will share. I never drink much. There is plenty for you.

Someone else in our running group was discussing the same this morning. I have never run Hobblecreek, I know you could get away with it at the Provo half. Organization is key---or I hard smack with a bat to the head of the guy checking for bibs.

I just noticed ALL of your kids are boys. That makes for long, loud days!

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:12:32

Wait, I have a plan. Jon and I are sneaking in our IPods--his under his shirt and mine in my hat. We can sneak you in, too!!! What do you want---Jon's shirt or my hat? Those are the only options.

From Scooby on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:51:06

Kelli,

yeah, Provo half would have been easy to do.....big lack of organization!! so are iPods not allowed?? I would say Jon's shirt would be better, but I'm guessing your hat smells nicer! :) Are you saying I should go for it?

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 14:38:36

No iPods. Jon was kind enough to send me the race bible to prove it. I have heard rumors of this before, but I am sure it only matters if you are gonna win. What are they gonna do if they catch me at the end, take away my 400th place or my finishers shirt?? Well, I do want the shirt, but whatever.

Your kids are little. I bet your wife does go a little nuts! I worked when my kids were that little, so someone else went nuts for me----but I paid them to go nuts! Anyway, kindergarten is a big step--that will be fun.

My list is complete---maybe I will add some more running. Um....no.

From scooby on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 16:30:45

(blob?.....ouch!.....I think I'll go drown my sorrows in large cup of milk and Oreos)

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 18:54:49

I wasn't saying you were a BLOB---you have no picture posted so I couldn't do that!

But if you keep eating oreos...mmm, sounds good! I am currently eating Swedish Fish and a diet coke. But it is okay, cause I have a headache.

Speaking of BLOB, how is the weight coming? I have now lost 3 pounds since our initial conversation (and i did it eating ice cream and a few brownies!!)

So, I made up for my horrible Monday by taking the kids on a bike ride. We fit their bikes and my wife's into the van, I had to ride to the park with my bike and the trailer. Rode around the half mile loop several times, then played soccer with them for a bit, then had to ride back. Total was about 5.5 miles. Later, went running - 1.5 miles, stopped to see the guys at the church I used to play B-ball with and they talked me into a game....or two.......then headed out for another 3.5. If you change your blog template to the triathlon-style you can separate your bike miles from run miles, and count more of your cross-training miles!

All caught up with my blogging!! Still here, just busy last few days with school starting, doc. appt., and end of month stuff at work! Happy running!

Okay, excused. Hope the first day of Kindergarten went well!

Race: Hobble Creek 1/2 Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:35:50, Place overall: 120, Place in age division: 17
Total Distance

Ok, so everything to report is "unofficial" since I did not "officially" run the race.....so, if I want to consider this a "PR" for the year, it would have to be followed by an asterik. Anyway, here goes......... So, I got towards the front of the start line and actually ran with the "elite" for about a quarter mile, then settled into my pace:

1 - 6:53  felt good, not as fast as it sounds

2 - 7:39 closer to my target of 7:30 or better

3 - 7:02  nice

4 - 7:02 wow, mister consistency! ( I need to do that more often )

5 - 7:27 right on pace

6 - 7:32 right on pace

7 - 7:39 slowing a bit, better pick it up

8 - 7:19 that's more like it

9 - 6:06 HOLY CRAP! I honestly didn't know I had this in me!! Where did that come from??!!?? The only thing I can think of is the goo I took after mile 6 or 7??!

10 - 7:17 feeling good, coming down from the "goo" high

11 - 7:56 anyone else feel that big, long hill? :P

12 - 7:32 back on target

13 - 7:25 (which actually was the last 1.1 I'm guessing??)

Long story short, it was about an 8 minute PR, so I was happy, but still more sore than I wanted AND best part of the day........not getting chicked!!! hee hee! Went back to find Jon and run with him the rest of the way in so I finished my scheduled 14.

HOLY FLIPPIN'COW---you were fast! All of this saying it felt good, bla, bla, bla. Whatever.

You did awesome, and it is as official as it needs to be!

Very bad day......long day at work, joints are like rusty hinges. Went to the doctor today where I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma. Got inhaler and tried it out, but can't stop the coughing and general tightness in my chest. I want to run so bad, but feel like I need to listen to my body, so I'll adjust my schedule this week and try to get miles the best I can.

Asthma and you ran that fast last Saturday, for real??

Sorry about that, it is a bummer. BUT Scott has asthma (allergy induced, exercised induced, laughing induced, and so on). He has a great doctor and has some great (and very expensive medicine) that he takes every morning and it has so changed his life! Hope you get it all straightened out.

From scooby on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:59:34

I think mine is allergy and exercise induced because I'm coughing even during the day, but I don't have a cold. Yes, the meds are waaaaay expensive. What does Scott take? I don't think this first one the doc gave me is working very well. He said we could try another one w/steroid if this one didn't work out. Keep your fingers crossed.....

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 21:15:01

Scott takes Advair. It is a preventative medicine, not something you take when you are having an actual asthma attack. For that he takes Ventolin. BUT, he never has asthma attack anymore---since the Advair. It is awesome.

He has ad asthma since he was 8, and had a lot of health problems (bronchitis any time he got a cold, pneumonia a few times, etc.) After the last hospitalization for pneumonia, he started seeing a pulmonologist instead of the Allergy and Asthma clinic. They fixed him right up and he has honestly been great since. I would go to one of them!!

(My husband just yelled down the stairs to not tell you any of this because you beat us in the half marathon!)

From scooby on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 00:06:07

Thanks for the info......even if secretly you don't want me to be better! ha ha! My doc prescribed Xopenex and it seems to be working ok.....I just want to be able to run without the coughing and wheezing and I think I won't feel as tired! I'll ask about Advair too. Tell Scott thanks... when I'm giving my acceptance speech for "most-improved-runner-in-Orem" award, I'll be sure to mention him!!!!

24:32 -  I'm not sure what is happening, but my body is literally falling apart. The asthma didn't help; doctor said it may take a few days for the inhaler to work......I warmed up, or tried to at least, then stretched. Pain in my left knee was so bad, I started to limp and favor that side which made the right leg/foot start to hurt, so I did the worst......I WALKED! YUCKKKKKK!!!! I stopped the Garmin because I just couldn't stand to see the 14 minute pace going on. Tried to limp/run home as best I could and finished the 3 miles very sad. I iced the knee, then back of knee, then the other knee and feel a bit better. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

GET BETTER! GET BETTER! sending mind messages! GET BETTER! GET BETTER! GET BETTER!

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 19:30:29

I am so sorry! I wonder what happened between Saturday and Monday to make your body fall apart? We are all getting old...but STILL!!! Take it easy, try one of Marion's famous ice baths, take lots of ibuprofen, and eat a few oreos. That should help (at least the oreos will make you feel better).

Okay, now I am caught up on your week. Thanks for posting, I go through withdrawals when I do not know that everyone else is out there running like me. It is what gets me out of bed every day!

From marion on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 19:35:23

AAhhhhh the ice bath! It is especially great with a chocolate banana smoothie! Don't forget to wear a hoodie! Also- remember- you have to stay in until ALL the ice it melted!!!

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 19:38:59

I think I would lean more in the direction of HOT CHOCOLATE!

From marion on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 19:51:18

Ok- fine! Chicken! That would actually be a bit onthe brighter side of things :D I sure widh I had some chocolate!! No- I must not start or I will be done for!!!

From scooby on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:15:31

So Marion.....is this an ice bath that you sit in?? Cause I was thinking maybe I outta wear an extra pair of speedos to keep other "parts" warm. OUCH! Forget the pain in my legs! :) And I do agree with Kelli on the hot chocolate, however, I'd have to have some warm buttered toast to dip into the hot chocolate and if I was making toast, I might as well fix a scrambled egg or two and some bacon. Then after breakfast......oh, wait......it's lunchtime.......well, that changes EVERYTHING!!! hee hee hee hee!

The legs actually felt better last night, but I'm still working through the asthma....yeah, it sucks, but I'm happy to know that I can get help and it is very treatable. Shoot, maybe with healthy lungs that can expand the way they should.....I could qualify for BOSTON!! (ok, I'm getting ahead of myself now....) ;P

From marion on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 15:53:00

Oh yes, my dear chicken friend! YOu sit yourself into the EMPTY tub. Begin to fill with cold water (be sure you have a hoodie on). Then once the cold water is mid way up the legs, add TONS of ice. Fill to desired height. Turn off water. Sit back and scream as the ice cold water slides up your back. Shiver until the ice is all gone. Drain and take a HOT, HOT shower.

sorry about the asthma! Maybe you should take an inhailer in to the bath with you incase you go into shock!

From jona on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 16:15:06

OK, there is the magic words that has made me remember that I had questions about ice baths.

After Hobble Creek, I was thinking I better ice my legs (and couldn't hurt my chicked ego). As I am sitting in this ice water frezzzzzzzzzzzzzzing my self I wondered, should I have showered first? Seems like a conflict in interest to Ice then take a hot shower. Isn't the idea to cool those legs/muscles off and let your body slowly warm them up? I seem to remember reading that, but can't remember. ???

Seeking further enlightenment.

PS-I did you proud Marion, I didn't stop till the ice had melted. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. I shivered for 2 hours after.

From marion on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 16:45:28

I dunno- my massage therapist (Josse) & Michelle, the fastest chick on the blog, said to do the hot after. I dunno. I typically am cold for the whole rest of the day. My husband, David, thinks I am a wack job! He's know me since I was 14, he's probably right!

From jona on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 16:53:18

Well, wackyness aside, I was just thinking that if I am putting myself through the pain of that dang cold bath, I want all the benefit, and if the hot shower after takes some of the benefit away, I will shower before. The heat is so welcome after though.

From jona on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 17:13:47

Ok, found a discussion that was already out there, at least part of it.

http://fastrunningblog.com/forum/index.php/topic,52.msg609.html#msg609

I think the key with this is the part is saying about the blood going back into the legs. Using his theory body/blood says "hey we can save those legs" and starts circulating down there, so if blood does that, the body must be realizing that "hey everything is ok up here in the core, go save the legs". And if that is the case, maybe a hot shower AFTER is the way to go, may help convience the body that all is ok in core'vile.

I'm beginning to think that it doesn't make much difference.

I do think the ice bath helped, I will do it after other long/harder runs/races.

From marion on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 17:51:35

The thing I like about the ice bath is that my legs don't feel like I've done anything hard if I do an ice bath. I have a much better day on my long runs or races if I do. we'll see if I feel the same after a 16 miler ;) or a marathon. I mostly do them to try to be like Michelle :)

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 21:23:18

I think you are all wack jobs!!! I will take the pain! I am not hard core runner.

From scooby on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 00:10:22

Well, maybe I'll consider it after my long run tomorrow.....heck, I might just add some Gatorade powder and drink the ice cold beverage while I sit in it....ok, that would require a shower before DEFINITELY!! We'll see....I'm with you Kelli! (We have some seriously wacky friends out there.....:)

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 00:35:09

You will need a straw for that, and extra long one!

And they are crazy!! And so are you! Why are you up bloggin' when you have a long run tomorrow?? I am updating my iPod with some new gangsta rap (really, just hip-hop and a little David Archuletta, HA!!) I need some new tunes if I am going to make it past 15 miles tomorrow.

From marion on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 00:41:28

15 miles! Are you nuts? Oh wait- we have determined that we are ALL nuts! Happy running to you all and to all a good night! I only have to go 2.5 tomorrow! tee heee heee! This coming off of an injury business is pretty cool!

Scoob- let me know how that gatorade bath tastes... YUCK!!!

From scooby on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 00:49:02

Yeah, crazy is an understatement! Getting my iPod ready to go too..... a little bit of Ludacris, 50 cent, P. Diddy, etc. Can't wait for my wife to drop me off somewhere and say, "have fun.....see ya back at the house!" Happy running....Marion, you lucky bum!

I could do 2.5 tomorrow......then I wouldn't have to try the ice bath!! :) Now should I try lemon lime or Arctic Blast?....... nitey nite all!

From jona on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 01:04:19

Hey nutty friends. So we have a 15 and a 2.5 miler tomorrow, I'm impressed. I think I will go somewhere near 10/11/12. FEET. Just kidding.

Hope to see some good reports tomorrow!

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 13:15:20

I HAVE NEWS!!! After my run today (18.1), I took and ice bath (and enjoyed a banana, strawberry, flax smoothie)!!! I could hardly walk, so I figured it was time to give it a try. I used all of the ice we had, but it melted before I had even read one chapter of my book! Anyway, we will see hot it goes, AND it was not as bad as I thought it would be (but I probably needed more ice).

My husband was laughing his head off at me, by the way!

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 13:18:44

Oh, and an afterthought (sorry, they need an edit button for me)---GREAT MUSIC!!

From marion on Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 13:39:24

Alrighty- your miles ROCK!! the ice bath will help! We have a cast iron tub that is FREEZING to start out with. Good girl!

So, while I'm waiting for the asthma inhaler to kick in, I thought I'd change it up a bit and warm up with the bike, then see how I feel. Went 3.32 miles, then ran 2.1 around the high school track in the dark, (needed a break from the pavement - and it was a goooood choice!), then biked around for another 2.59 for a grand total of 8 miles of workout. I really pushed it on the bike because that doesn't hurt my knees, joints or even muscles.... just a very good burn! Supposed to run 7 today and 15 tomorrow so we'll see how it goes!!

Had my wife drop me off past the Mt. Timp. temple so I could run home. I ran on the canal road (dirt) which was nice on my aching joints/knees, etc. Had to walk a couple of times, but totalled 9 miles to our house. Watered my legs off with the hose so I felt one tenth of what an ice bath must feel like :) But, I wasn't in too much pain after so maybe there's something to it....... Went out later and biked 6, then tried to go out running some more, but could only manage another half mile and figured I better not push it. I am still feeling the effects of the Hobble Creek half - I think I did something to my groin, which affects my stride, which starts to bother the knee..... (man, I should be a doctor). Speaking of, I need to get back to him and try something else cause the coughing won't stop. The inhaler isn't working. I'm a wreck.......CALGON......take me away!!!!!!!!

I was totally thinking about it, but didn't want to get the entire primary sick (don't you just hate that when other's kids get your kids sick!!....) Well, if you say that those pancakes have super healing powers, then I interpret that to mean that you are telling me I should make some to feel better. Ok, whatever you say doc.... I mean who am I to go against a medical professional's orders??!! :P

From marion on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 12:14:54

Yes you should! The syrup recipe is on my monday blog.. it is SOOO stinkin' good. The pancakes (don't let the secret out) are Krusteaz with mashed banana and chocolate chips sprinkled in when you pour the batter on the griddle. You can use whatever pancake recipe you like, 1 to 2 mashed bananas and about 6-7 chocolate chips per pancake! Go forth and heal thy self!!!

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 15:53:38

But way to "trick" Marion into giving us the recipe!

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 23:31:27

Yes, I agree. we all must breathe! But I do agree on the pulmonologist thing. They know what they are doing and can fix you better and faster. Hey, you can get hospitalized like Scott did and they will squeeze you in the next day?!?

Happy 4th birthday to your son tomorrow. I guess you can have a treat---but just one, mind you!

From jona on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 00:09:25

I think I told Kelli, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed. He may like his anonymity.

I may have to give clues, then I can say I didn't really say. But then again he may be watching this blog.

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 10:27:08

I think it is safe to say that he is watching his own blog. I think I only know his last name---or I should say knew it. I forgot.

I like Scooby. It works for me.

From scooby on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 12:18:41

So, I thought about the whole anonymity thing and maybe that's why I was a bandit @ Hobble Creek.....maybe I don't want others to know my secret identity, but then I thought....what am I trying to hide here? NOTHING! I'M FAST!! and I WANT people to know who that fast guy was that just passed them!

TOTALLY JOKING! I'm lucky if I'm not the one getting passed! Real name: Jared Scoubes; last name rhymes with robes, but everyone always mispronounces it Scoobs or Scoobees, hence the nickname Scooby and I finally figured, "why fight it!" After all, I do love my Scooby snacks.

My children's rooms are entirely decked out with Scooby doo stuff that I have received as gifts over the years - kinda fun! Conner, my oldest, is 5 and started kindergarten last week. Oliver, second, is 4 today and started preschool last week. Mom stays home with baby, Dylan, who is 16 months and the ham of the kids so far. And yes.....I am watching my blog.....always watching.....

Marion - nice reference to Sandlot - CLASSIC MOVIE!!

Kelli - still waiting to hear from the doctor for a "plan B" until I can see the pulmonologist.

Jon - I would like to have seen some clues....but not much rhymes with Jared....ha!

Now, for the serious stuff. How is your "lose 10-15 pounds" goal going. I just want you to know that I have lost weight!!! FINALLY. I only 7 pounds to go of my 10. And, I am eating treats when I want them (just not the whole bag of oreos, mind you).

Went to pulmonologist and he didn't even address or acknowledge me having asthma. Took chest x-ray......nothing. Took a few different types of breathing tests......nothing. He says I'm suffering from sleep deprivation, possibly sleep apnia?, he prescribed something for heartburn? (he thinks acid-reflux is contributing to my cough) and prescribed a stronger nasal spray/decongestant for the post-nasal drip (also a contributing factor for the cough)

 WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

Sleep deprivation........DUH!!!!! Three little boys under the age of five!!!! heartburn??!! I'll take a TUMS thank you.....NOT a $30 prescription!!! HOW ABOUT THE COUGHING NON-STOP AFTER I RUN OR EVEN JUST ON A DAILY BASIS FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS SINCE I'VE RAMPED UP TRAINING/MILES FOR THE MARATHON!!!!!???????? What a joke. I started taking the new nasal spray..... so far, so good I guess.....too early to tell. I also got my family doctor to prescribe Albuterol inhaler; so far, so good......too early to tell. Didn't run cause I just plain didn't want to! That will give my legs another day to rest so I'm okay with the rest.

That is all very interesting. Maybe you have really bad allergies?? I know it can affect me pretty badly while running---I feel like I am breathing through a straw. I even use Scott's inhaler sometimes, and it works. Try some Claritin or something, too.

Listen to me, I think I am a doctor!

From scooby on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 10:47:42

I do have allergies, but I don't feel like they're THAT outta control. Hopefully the new decongestant works. He didn't say ANYTHING about asthma other than he thought my symptoms were NOT asthma. I'll see how the new inhaler works......

Was supposed to wake up early....didn't happen. Wife has had some cramping and discomfort associated with this latest pregnancy so neither of us slept well. Yes, we're preggers, but didn't tell anyone and for good reason.....today she miscarried. Got off work to go to doctor's; off early to help with boys; she is very sad. Had to come back to work after hours.....so, as a result of today's events, running suffers! Oh well! I will be blessed for being a good daddy and husband right? :)

oh Jared, I am SO sorry! Yes, you will be blessed for being a WONDERFUL Dad and Husband! I am SO, so sorry! :( What a sad thing for your sweet family.

So sorry to hear about that. That really stinks. Everything takes a back seat to taking care of your wife right now.

From scooby on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:00:47

Thanks Kelli and Marion for your condolences. I need to get out tonight, after young men's and after kids are in bed and after I make sure wifey is ok. Keep your fingers crossed for me.... just 4 miles, but man do I NEED it!!!

Oh, and Kelli, I forgot.....about the

"weight loss goal"..... so the other night, I finished off the package of Double Stuff oreos (there were only 6 or 7), but didn't want that chocolatey brown gunk in my teeth so I went back to the pantry and finished off the last 3 golden oreos. I have to admit, I felt pretty guilty "finishing" two packages of cookies, but, I managed to drop two pounds. I'm up and down by 2-3 lbs. on a daily basis so I guess I'm not doing too well with my goal. I'm 195 and would like to be 185-190. I don't even want to think about how much I weigh after having not run Sun, Mon, or yesterday......

Hey Jared, I'm sorry to hear this news. Please let me know if there is anything I can do!

Hang in there friend! Blessings will come, running is secondary to these more important things!

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 13:18:48

Way to finish off the oreos, now what treat will your kids eat??

Okay, once your life settles down and you get back to running, we will work on the weight loss. I have 5 pounds to go (until I change my mind and decide i wanted to lose more to begin with).

Good luck wit the run, but do take care of your family!

How is everything on the home front. I hope your wife is doing alright! I hope you are too :)

I spoke with Jared for a few minutes yesterday, they are doing well. His wife is recovering well. She is somewhat sad, and Jared is being a great hubby and helping all over the place.

They have had a trip planned for a some months that they are leaving for tonight, the Dr said that they have to do a lot of laying around, "take it very easy"! So, they will follow the Dr's orders!

So, Scooby Dooby Doo, are you back from vacation? I hope it went well and that your wife is feeling somewhat better.

Still planning on St George?

From scooby on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:38:38

Yes! I'm back! We went to the Dominican Republic for a week, (incentive trip that I won through work). It was an all-inclusive resort, so we literally did nothing but relax, lay on the beach or by the pool and sip pina coladas. The wifey is feeling TONS better and the trip couldn't have come at a better time for her and for us. I did bring my running shoes and managed to get out; I'll update the blog.....you'll see.... pretty funny. Still planning on St. George however, my training is NOT where I had hoped it would be at! Oh well! I got out last night and it felt great so hopefully all my wounds are healed and I can get in some good mileage before the big day! Thanks for your thoughts and kind words. Now, back to the beach...er, I mean, back to work......uggghhhhh! :(

Oh, good. I am so glad you guys had fun and relaxed some!

You will have to make plans to meet the night before the marathon with the rest of the FRB. Wear your Scooby shirt or I will never find you!

Ready and waiting for your update!

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 14:55:20

Hey guys, I forgot to let you know, I talked to Scooby the other day and He is doing good. He isn't running right now, he thinks he got a stress fracture in his foot during SG, so he is taking the winter off. Also, said something about spending time with the kids, wife ..... blah blah blah. "Priorities" Just kidding. He is doing well, I'm sure he has kept up on his cross dressing. :-)

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 13:10:15

Jon you crack me up!!! Just glad all is well with him. I hope he ENJOYS the winter off. Tell him HI and way to go for getting on with his life while the rest of us BLOG away.
